Services provided by RMD New Zealand:

When it came to providing viewing platforms and pit facilities for the V8 Super Cars race at the 2.8-kilometre Pukekohe Park Raceway, 45 kilometres south of Auckland the contractor, Carton Group Ltd, needed an access and platform specialist that would provide full throttle performance. In RMD New Zealand, it found a company that understood the deadlines that this type of high profile project imposed; one that had the expertise, commitment and solutions to carry out the project safely and successfully.

The race - one of the top events in New Zealand's motor sport calendar - was spread over three days and attracted daily crowds in excess of 40,000. RMD's main challenge was to design, supply and erect the 146-metre long by eight-metre wide and six-metre high pit platform. This was divided into 20 individual pit areas where the V8 giants of the track were prepared prior to battling it out with each other for the winner's laurels. The top of the pit structure was utilised as a viewing platform for up to 400 corporate and VIP visitors.

RMD New Zealand was also responsible for constructing the support structure for a further six corporate viewing platforms around the track. These ranged in length between 38 metres and 145 metres, between nine metres and 12 metres wide, and from 1.5 metres to 4.5 metres high. All of the platforms had four ten-stair towers for access.

The project utilised RMD's Rapid Scaffold with slab beams and Rapid Ply panels, and Rapid Scaffold with Alform aluminium beams, Super Slim Soldiers and plywood decking. The trusses were constructed from Super Slim Soldiers - one of the company's flagship products - Bar Ties and tube and fitting scaffolding. RMD supplied two erection teams, one for the platforms and one for the pits, and the design was a collaboration between engineers in RMD New Zealand and colleagues in Australia.
